INDUSTRIAL MINERALS:

Distribution of three types of industrial minerals: barite, siliceous sand and talc. Out of the mentioned minerals, barite is the mineral of which we are distributors in Spain and Europe, operating in the following varieties: painting, chemical, drilling and precipitated barium sulfate.

Barite is a dense mineral composed of barium sulfate (BaSO4). It is commonly used as a densifying agent for all types of drilling fluids. Barite is mined in many areas of the world and shipped as ore to crushing plants in strategic locations, where the API specifies its crushing at a particle size of 3 to 74 microns.

Barite powder, white or gray, is a type of important mineral that contains barium. It has many advantages; strong inert chemical, good stability, alkaline acid, high density, moderate rigidity, high specific gravity, high whiteness, absorption of harmful rays (X and T rays), without magnetism or poison. It is widely used in fields of chemistry, painting, rubber, glass, paper, ceramics and medicine, etc.

There are two varieties of barite:

API BARITE POWDER

One of the main uses of barite is in the oil industry, specifically oil drilling. Due to the properties of this mineral (high density, low abrasivity, chemical inertness and non-magnetic susceptibility), barite is widely used as a regulating agent for the density of drilling muds of oil and gas wells. It is used as a density controlling agent to confer the hydrostatic pressure required for the mud column. The barite has a density of 3,5 – 4 g/cm3 and is very insoluble, therefore, it does not react with the drilling fluid.

Therefore, it serves for cooling, borehole reinforcement, crude oil control and natural gas pressure. In this way, stable oil and gas production prevents an explosion accident.

95% of barite production goes to this activity; consequently, the production of barite depends directly on this industry’s exploration plans.

CHEMICAL GRADE BARITE POWDER

The remaining 5% of barite production is sent to the paint industry (car paint). When used in paint, barite powder can be used as filler and can be used in place of some expensive materials such as barium sulfate precipitate, titanium dioxide, etc. In the manufacture of paint, it can control the viscosity of the paint, the color, the brightness and the good stability.

Apart from this application there are other applications of the chemical grade barite powder as in the plastics industry, rubber industry, the healthcare industry and the paper manufacturing industry.

Plastic industry: When used in the plastics industry, barite powder can be used as a filler in plastics, such as ABS and makes products bright in color and gloss. It can also improve the intensity, stiffness and abrasion resistance of the products.

Rubber industry: When used in the rubber industry, barite powder with a size below 28μm can be used as a filler in rubber products, and the products become acidic, alkaline and water resistant. It can also reduce costs and improve the intensity of the products.

Healthcare industry: When used in medicine, it can be used as barium flour material for the intestines and for the stomach. Also as plaster filler. In certain dosages the quality of the medication may increase.

Papermaking industry: When used in the papermaking industry, barite powder with high fineness is used as a filler in white paper and brown paper to improve whiteness and coverage percentage. It is used to make playing cards, heavy paper for printing, etc.

COMMERCIAL VARIETY

Finally, we are distributors of barium sulfate precipitate. This precipitate is obtained by a chemical precipitation process and allows special chemical purity and ultra-thin particle sizes. White enhances brilliance in many coatings and increases the effectiveness of colored pigments. In medical X-ray tests, the white serves as a contrast agent.
